The importance of Socialization for Seniors

Did you know…?

Socialization plays a vital role in the overall well-being of seniors. Something as simple as ‘having someone to talk with‘ can enhance a person’s cognitive function and physical well-being. This is particular true for older individuals.

Just as social connectivity can enhance our well-being, social isolation can have widespread detrimental effects. It can lead to increased depression, anxiety, cognitive decline. It contributes to lower immune responses, progression of chronic disease, decreased mobility and independent functioning, and even premature death.

Community-based socialization programs provide opportunities for seniors to participate in activities, form friendships, and build support networks. In turn, these activities stimulate positive biological responses within our bodies that help to fight disease and reduce pain and fatigue. Such programs are an essential part of well-balanced, strong communities.

This year, NU-HOPE will begin exploring ways that communities can work together to address isolation and increase social connectivity. Some solutions may be easy… others may be more difficult and demand strong and diverse partnerships in order to achieve success.

Yes, it will be a challenge. But we know that we are up to finding real solutions.
