Supporting our Thrift Stores
Sales from our thrift stores provide critical funding for the services that we provide. Our community can help support our Thrift Stores in three ways: Shopping, Donating quality items, and Volunteering.
Shopping
For a unique shopping experience, we encourage you to stop by our two NU-HOPE Thrift Stores. You never know what treasures you will find!
In addition to finding tremendous bargains, every purchase supports services for local seniors. It also reduces the number of items that clutter our landfills!
Donations
NU-HOPE is always in need of donations of quality, usable items which can be sold in our stores. Furniture, clothing, household goods and working appliances are always in high demand. If needed, NU-HOPE may be able to pick up items that you wish to donate.
To further discuss items you wish to donate, or to arrange a pick-up of larger items, please contact the Thrift Store Manager.
Best items to donate
NU-HOPE is always in need of quality items for our thrift store and can accept a wide variety of items, including:
• Furniture
• Household Goods
• Garden items and Tools
• Antiques and Collectibles
• Towels and Linens
• Clothing: Please note that all clothing should be clean, stain-free, and in good, useable condition.
NU-HOPE also welcomes larger items such as cars, trailers, boats and sheds on a case-by-case basis. For more information concerning the donation of these larger items, please contact NU-HOPE at 863-382-2134.
Items we may not be able to accept
Unfortunately, there are some items that NU-HOPE is unable to accept due to limited space and resources.
Examples include clothing that is stained or excessively worn, broken appliances or furniture, and some heavy fiberboard furniture that is easily damaged when transported. To determine if NU-HOPE is able to accept a particular item, please contact the thrift store management.
Items dropped off after hours and exposed to rain, unfortunately, often must be taken to the dump – which ends up costing our agency funds instead of helping us! Also know that items dropped off after hours are often stolen. For this reason, we ask that you only bring donated items during our regular store hours.
Volunteering
Volunteers are essential to our thrift stores. They help sort donated items, arrange merchandise on shelves, and help with sales.
NU-HOPE partners with the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program, sponsored by South Florida State College, to enroll volunteers who are age 55 or older. This provides volunteers with special benefits such as supplemental accident and liability insurance while on duty and recognition through the program. Locally, over 20 different nonprofit and governmental agencies are assisted through this program.
Please note, however, that younger volunteers, are also welcome!
Our greatest need is for people who can volunteer on an ongoing basis- such a few hours every week. However, we also welcome groups who wish to volunteer for a single day, as they are often able help process our donated items.
To learn more about volunteer opportunities, please contact NU-HOPE at (863) 382-2134.
